Organic vs. Non-Organic
Organic foods have long been around and are continuously growing ever more popular. Once only found in health food stores, it’s now possible to find many organic foods at a variety of food stores locally as well. As more people become enlightened to the benefits offered by choosing organically grown produce, the demand for organic products grows as well. Still, since the introduction of this new method, there have been many debates in regards to the differences between organic and nonorganic foods. Many nonconventional farmers offer rebuttals against growing their products organically because understandably, naturally grown plants and animals take more time, effort, and money. However, the results of this added care has definitely shown itself to make a positive impact on our food and our environment, which is why many people today are turning to organically grown produce.
What is Organic?
When something is labeled as organic, it refers to how a specific food or drink was grown and prepared. This can make a big difference in many ways. When things are grown and harvested organically, they are taken care of in ways that does not make use of chemicals. In the case of plants that are grown organically, organic farmers will steer clear from using chemicals to hold off the growth of weeds. They won’t use hormones on animals or chemical fertilizers. They will also take care to be sure that the methods they employ cater to conserving water and soil as well as reducing pollution. When something is cared for in this way and sent into the food industry, you can usually tell it’s organic by the green USDA label.
How Pesticides & Chemicals Affect Us
A million pounds of chemicals and pesticides are used each year by conventional farmers. So it comes as no surprise that the use of these pesticides and chemicals to grow and produce our food and drinks is detrimental to our environment. Furthermore, these pesticides don’t always wash off, and when they get into our system, they have a chance of causing harm to our bodies. Some of these adverse effects include cell, nerve, and liver damage since our liver has to work harder to rid our bodies of these toxins. Although pesticides can rid plants of harmful bacteria and bugs, they come at a cost to our environment and health, especially the health of the farmers. When food is grown without chemicals, plants, animals, and people lead healthier lives as a result. Pesticides and chemicals may also affect the taste of our foods; many claim that things that are grown organically generally taste better, but this is also up to preference.
Why it Matters?
Choosing to purchase things that are taken care of in an organic manner is healthier all the way around. Farmers are not exposed to harmful pesticides on the constant basis that they are on conventional farms. Pollution and waste run off is heavily reduced, and the depletion of the soil is also minimized. Conventional, non-organic farms also make heavy use of petroleum which depletes the energy supply of our country by 12 percent. The pesticides and chemicals that they use can stick around in the ecosystem for decades, causing adverse effects to our land. Organically grown food takes more time and care, so as a result it may cost more. However what should be kept in mind is that the long term costs that we are faced with when we introduce chemicals into our world ends up costing us much more in the future. With all the environmental benefits organic products can offer, they certainly help to make way for a healthier, happier planet.
